toner
A facial toner is used after a cleanser to remove all traces of the cleanser and whatever dirt that's left of the skin. Your face is exposed to pollution and dust all day long. Add on your sweat and the oil your skin produces which traps the dirt, thoroughly cleansing your face everyday is necessary in order to keep you skin clear.
Not all facial toners are suitable for everyone. Besides cleaning up the gunk, toners are also used to treat the skin. The facial toner you would gain the most benefits from would depend on your skin type. Normal skin can take most facial toners, so it is those with oily, dry or aging skin that have to take extra care.
Oily Skin
If your skin is oily, characterized by mid morning shine, or greasy patches on your bare skin by the end of the day, you can go for an alcohol based toner (some people would beg to differ on this point) or one which contains witch hazel. Your toner has to cut through the grease to thoroughly cleanse your skin. As facial toners are left on the skin, it should help you control the oil. For oily skin, check out these Ahava facial toners
Why I say some people disagree with alcohol based toners is this. Alcohol dries the skin. Yes, it cuts through the oil and dissolves it which makes it a boon for oily skin. However, some camps say that by removing the oil, alcohol forces the skin to overcompensate by producing even more oil. On the other hand, doctors recommend alcohol based toners for extremely oily skin that is acne prone.
Toners For Acne
What about people with acne?
Acne skin tends to be extremely oily, so a toner with alcohol or witch hazel or both would definitely help. Another ingredient to add to the list is salicylic acid. Acne happens when pores are blocked. Dirt and oil accumulates in a blocked pore allowing bacteria to breed happily, giving birth to a pimple. To get rid of acne, the first thing you have to do is to unblock the pore, the second is to kill the bacteria. Salicylic acid unblocks the pore. To kill the bacteria, use a toner or a pimple treatment that contains tea tree oil as well, or go to the doctor who would probably prescribe some antibiotics. Murad acne facial toners are made specifically for those with acne. Neutrogenal clean pore toner contains salicylic acid which fights acne.
Toners For Dry Skin
If your skin is dry, do you really need a toner?
If you use a cleansing lotion, you definitely need a toner. Except in your case, it is probably called a softener. Pick a gentle toner or softener for dry skin. Preferably one that is alcohol free, then again, the full composition of the toner determines whether it is suitable for you or not. As long as it is meant for dry or mature skin, it should work for you. Instead of witch hazel, rosewater or orange blossom water would work well as a toner for your skin type. You will find natural, organic toners meant for dry skin amongst these Aubrey organics facial toners while the Elizabeth Arden Facial Toners are more luxurious.
Anti-aging Toners
Toners can contain anti-aging ingredients that can help you ward away the wrinkles. Ingredients like aloe vera, lavender, antioxidants and a myriad of wrinkle fighters are found in a number of facial toners that should help you slow down the march of time. You will find these among the Greatskin facial toners and Desert Essence facial toners
