Oily Skin

How do you know if yours is the oily skin type?

Typically, your face would look shiny by noon from the grease it produces. You would be more likely to get pimples and blackheads. All that doesn't sound very appealing.

So how to get rid of oily skin?

Certainly not by drying it up with alcohol-based products. Not in the long run anyway. Actually, oily skin is a blessing in disguise. After all, your skin would get wrinkles much later than dry skin. In fact, if you use appropriate skin care for oily skin and use spf protection at all times, your skin would be resistant to the effects of aging.

Oily skin is thicker than other skin types. On top of that, as you get older, your skin's production of oil decreases, which is disastrous for someone with dry skin to start with but for you, you would appreciate your currently oily skin as time marches on and you compare your skin with that of your peers.

All that said, although oily skin is less likely to get fine lines and wrinkles, when the lines do appear, they tend to be deep. So oily skin care should take into account the passage of time. Use sunscreen. Take antioxidants and use antioxidant rich skin care on your skin to maintain you youthful looks, or at least, slow the appearance of lines.

What to do for oily skin

  1. Cleanse skin thoroughly twice a day. 3 times daily if you suffer from pimples. Use oily skin care that rinses off completely and takes away the dirt and excess oil with it. A good wash off cleaner, cleansing gel or liquid facial soap or even a bar of facial soap would be great. Dr. Brandt skincare is excellent for oily skin. Your skin is prone to pimples as the excess oil can clog up pores creating a condusive breeding place for the acne bacteria, leading to acne. Prevent that with proper, thorough cleansing.
  2. A toner would be good. For acne, a doctor may prescribe something that contains alcohol to dry up the excess oil and kill the bacteria. That could backfire in the long run, tricking the skin into thinking it does not produce enough oil, forcing it to produce even more oil to compensate. On the flip side, it could dry your skin too much, leading to wrinkles before they are due.
  3. Don't skip moisturizer. Yes, your skin has oil, but it also needs moisture. Go for an oil-free, non pore clogging moisturizer meant for oily skin like the ones in the clinique oily skin care range and you should be fine.
  4. As for make up for oily skin, if possible, skip foundation. If not, then the best makeup for oily skin would be a light foundation that is oil-free and which is noncomedogenic ( does not clog pores)
Here is a selection of oily skin products that you can use to give your skin the care it needs.
