cleansing
Cleansing your skin during the time of the cavemen would mean splashing water from the stream over your face to get rid of dirt and sweat and to freshen up the skin. With the invention of soap, washing the face twice daily with soap and water became part of daily hygiene. Nowadays soap and water alone is not enough for many of us.
For one thing, soap these days is drying. Not surprising since in commercial soap making, glycerin is separated from the soap and sold in other more profitable ways. Glycerin is an excellent moisturizer. Without that, using ordinary soap to wash your face would end up drying your skin. Also, soap has been abandoned for facial washes because soap would leave a residue. Cleansing creams and cleasing milks are preferred to soap because these can dissolve oil and cleanse the skin more effectively without the harsh detergent of a soap.
Yet there are facial soaps you can buy that are excellent for washing your face with. My favourite is clinique soap for oily skin. Incidentally, I know of a doctor who see patients with acne who recommends soap and water for patients fighting an acne problem. Clinique soap is excellent for that. Dry skin can use soap and water too, if you go for
Clinique Facial Soap - Extra Mild which is very gentle on the skin.
Different cleansing methods work best for different skin types.
Cleansing oily skin
If your skin is oily, avoid cleansing creams. Even cleansing milk should be followed by a facial soap like the ones listed above, or a facial wash. You want something that would wash away the dirt and oil accumulated throughout the day, and not to add more oil to your already greasy skin. A gel formula is preferred to something too creamy. Here are more cleansers and skin care products suitable for oily skin.
Cleansing acne prone skin
Besides getting rid of the dirt and oil, you would want to kill the bacteria that is giving you pimples.
For that, look for cleansers with antibacterial ingredients like triclosan or tea tree oil. These two are very effective against acne bacteria. The tea tree oil Desert Essence cleansers are excellent cleansers for acne prone skin. Here are more acne skin care products.
Cleansing dry skin
If your skin is dry, cleanse your skin very carefully. Do not use anything harsh or drying on your skin but pamper it with cleansing lotions, cleansing creams or cleansing milk that moisturize your skin even while it cleanses. You can use a cleansing water instead of a cream if you like the refreshing feel of water. Some of the Aubrey Organics cleansers are wonderful for dry skin as are Biotherm cleansers for dry skin. Here are more dry skin products
Budget cleansing for normal skin
Normal skin can take virtually anything. Some of my favourites on a budget Biore cleansers and The Body Shop Facial cleansers
